Welcome to year 2! We are so excited to start a fantastic year with your child. In this letter we will inform you of the exciting learning we have planned for the Autumn term and introduce you to the year 2 teams.
Year 2 Yellow will be with Miss Easter (Class Teachers), Mrs Myers and Mrs MacPherson.
Year 2 Blue will be with Mrs Chapman, Mrs Odell (Class Teachers) and Mrs Doherty.
This term our theme is all about ‘Our Local Area’. We will be exploring the grounds of our school and town in Geography, using maps and aerial photographs to identify key physical and human features. We will look at our wider surroundings in RE, focusing on New Beginnings and discussing The Creation Story.
In Art and Design and Technology, we will look at the techniques and colours used to express emotions by artists such as, Yayoi Kusama, Robert and Sonia Delaunay and Wassily Kandinsky as well as moving mechanisms. This will then be linked to our Science learning on Everyday Materials to create their own artwork and models.
In maths we are recapping on place value, we will challenge ourselves by using addition and subtraction and we will be exploring shapes. We will develop our writing skills in English looking at both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Our PE days are on Tuesday and Thursday for Year 2 Yellow and Monday and Wednesday for Year 2 Blue; as a school, we are continuing to allow children to come into school in their PE kits on these days only. Please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit (navy shorts and white t-shirt or the school logo joggers and sweatshirt) other sports wear is not acceptable. As we approach the cooler months, we will still be taking the children outside for some PE lessons, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
Children will receive a pink home learning book and a termly takeaway menu full of home learning ideas. As a guideline, we suggest one item to be completed each week in their red home-learning book and returned to us to be marked every Monday (first return date to be the 19th September).
Children will also have weekly guided reading sessions in groups, which will include a worksheet linked to the book we send home. The dates of this for each class will be sent via dojo.
We hope you are looking forward to starting the new term as much as we are. Please check class Dojo for any changes, updates and more information about what is happening in year 2 and do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
