Welcome to year 1. This half term the children will be learning around a theme called ‘Our School Family’. We will be leaning about local geography and the history of the school. We will be learning about plants in our local area in science. In art we will look at Roy Lichtenstein’s artwork and create masterpieces inspired by his pop art style. In music will be learning a hip hop song, the children will be rapping, singing and playing instruments.
In English we will be writing a story called Grandad’s Island, teaching children about stylist story writing. In maths we will be learning about place value, greater than and less than, moving on to addition and subtraction.
When you arrive on Monday morning between 8:45 and 9:00 you will be able to come in through the main gates at the front of the school or the ‘drop off’ gate, that you entered through last year. You will then be able to walk around to the classroom door if you wish with your child. Please say goodbye to your child either on the playground or at the classroom door. Please do not come into the school building. There will be adults guiding you to where you need to go.
Some other important things you need to know are:
Mondays and Thursdays the children will have a PE lesson. This means they need to come to school in their PE kit. A white t shirt, black or navy shorts, black or navy socks and trainers. They can also wear their school jumper or cardigan. They could also wear the St Martha’s tracksuit. Please make sure every item coming into school is named.
Your child will be heard read on a Friday. They will be part of a group where they will be heard to read and have a discussion about the book. It is essential that your child brings their reading book and monkey diary on a Friday.
As it was in Reception, it is vital that you hear your child read regularly at home and write a comment in their monkey diary.
At the end of year 1 the children complete a Government initiated Phonics check. We will talk more about this throughout the year. We will start the year by reassessing the children’s knowledge of phase 2, 3 and 4. We will then move on to phase 5 which is all about teaching alternative ways of spelling sounds the. children already know. We will do our best to prepare your child to do their best in the Phonics check and we will let you know things you can do at home to support your child.
Your child will need to bring in a named water bottle each day.
Book bags only please. No backpacks. Our cloakroom is very small and we just do not have the space. Please make sure that coats, scarves, hats and gloves are all named.
No toys or jewellery please!
Your child has now been assigned to a house, either Mathew, Mark, Luke or John. They will earn Dojo points which will contribute to a whole school effort. Your child, I’m sure, will let them know what house they are in.
At the end of the day, you will come round to collect your child from the classroom door, between 3:00 and 3:15. Please ensure that your child has been picked up by 3:15. If someone other than a parent is picking up, please let me know via Class Dojo or phone the school and a message will get to me.
