Letters Home

Dear Parents,

The Year 1 team welcomes back everyone and hope you all had a lovely Easter! We hope that you had a restful break and enjoyed the lovely weather we had for the Easter weekend. Mrs De Luca and Mrs Fysh look forward to hearing about what the children have been up to.

This Summer term in Year 1, within our core subjects we will focus on writing based on the book ‘The Queen’s Hat’ which will tie in nicely with the Queen’s Jubilee. In maths, the children will explore capacity, fractions and money. In science the children will be exploring and investigating various plants and animals, with a focus on the different types of animals and how we classify them.

Throughout RE this term we will be looking at the Easter story and Pentecost. This will also be supported with our work in RHSE and PATHS where we will continue to learn about emotions, love and God’s many roles. We will continue to have weekly collective worship assemblies where we learn to live by Jesus’ example.

In History we will look at the significance of the Great Fire of London, what it was like to live in the city at the time, and how London has changed since the fire. In Geography we will be studying the weather and its impacts . The children will enjoy looking at David Hockney as our focus within Art, engaging with the different methods he used.

Year 1 Yellow will have PE on a Monday and Thursday. Year 1 Blue will have PE on a Tuesday and Friday, so please ensure that your child comes into school in their full PE kit. Some PE lessons take place outside and hopefully if the weather is kind to us we will have some lovely warm days. With this in mind could you please make sure your child has a water bottle at school as well as sun hats and sun lotion applied when necessary.

Please could you make sure that reading books are in book bags every day. Guided reading days are set throughout the week but there may be opportunities where we can listen to them on an extra day. We encourage you to continue to read with them at home every day and ask questions to develop their comprehension. Thank you for your support with this.

This term we will continue with spelling practice. Children will practice a list of words with a target sound. This encourages the children to recognise digraphs and tri-graphs within words. This will refine their skills prior to the national phonic screening check in June.

We will continue to use Google Classroom for any learning from home when necessary.

If you have questions throughout the term, please contact us on Class Dojo.

Many Thanks,
Mrs DeLuca, Mrs Fysh and all the Year 1 team.
